About Us

Fenestration Canada and the Paramedic Chiefs of Canada are proud to be the founding sponsors of Partners Promoting Window and Balcony Safety across Canada.

Partners Promoting Window and Balcony Safety is an awareness program that identifies risks and offers fall prevention strategies. Through this program, participating Emergency Medical Services agencies aspire to eliminate injuries and deaths associated with falls from a window, balcony or deck.

History

Toronto EMS was one of many agencies that participated in a campaign to promote a newly unified Toronto municipal bylaw, governing the use of window safety devices in the spring of 2002.

Despite the introduction of that bylaw, 9 children ranging from 18 months to 8 years of age, fell from windows or balconies between February and October. The tragic results included 3 deaths, 2 critical or serious injuries and 4 minor injuries

That prompted Dean Shaddock, Coordinator of the Toronto EMS Community Medicine Program, to begin the development of a safety awareness program. Fenestration Canada invited Toronto EMS to incorporate a small display into the association's annual trade show, Win-door North America 2002.

Since that time, the continued support of Fenestration Canada and the Win-door North America Show Committee has led to a number of significant achievements focused towards the formation of this unique program - Partners Promoting Window and Balcony Safety.
